SUMMARY:Comparative Medicine Symposium
DESCRIPTION:Overview:  The excessive translational failure rates of pre-clinical laboratory animal model studies calls for alternative approaches which can better inform on the development of biomedical innovations.  Compared to laboratory animals\, companion dogs are a phenotypically diverse population which naturally develop neoplastic\, cardiovascular\, infectious\, metabolic\, neurological\, orthopedic\, and autoimmune diseases with similarity to humans.  This symposium focuses on the increasingly important role of dogs and veterinary clinical studies in the development of drugs\, biologics\, diagnostics and devices with parallel applications for human and veterinary medicine. \nLearn more and register. \n\n\n\n\nAcademic Faculty\n\n\n\n\nWe plan on adding presenters to each session where appropriate.  If  you have projects that are relevant to a particular topic area\, please let us know. \nEvent Contact: christine.talbot@asu.edu \n\n\nPreliminary Agenda / Sessions\n\n\n\n\n7:30am-8:30am: Registration and breakfast\n8:30am-9:30am: Comparative medicine and the role of veterinary clinical studies in translational research\nCraig Woods DVM\, MS\, MBA\n9:30am-10:30am: Comparative canine cancers: -omics\, diagnostics and treatments\nRachel Venable DVM\, MS\, DACVIM\n10:30am-11:00am: Break\n11:00am-12:00pm: Veterinary cardiology: diseases and interventions\nMatthew Miller DVM\, MS\, DACVIM\n12:00pm-1:00pm: Lunch\n1:00pm-2:00pm: One Health and the veterinarian’s role in advancing biomedical innovations\nGeorge Poste DVM\, PhD\n2:00pm-3:00pm:  The Dog Aging Project\, canine cognitive and neurological diseases\, and molecular aging\nNoah Snyder-Mackler PhD\, Emily Bray PhD and Evan MacLean PhD\n3:00pm-4:00pm: Infectious diseases\nHayley Yaglom-Hemmelgam MS\, MPH\n4:00pm-4:30pm: Structuring academic and veterinary clinical research collaborations\nValerie Harris PhD and Craig Woods DVM\, MS\, MBA\n4:30pm-4:45pm: Closing remarks\n5:00pm-6:30pm: Reception at 1951@Skysong
