SUMMARY:UA TReO - Small Business Requirements for SBIR/STTR Grants Ownership Considerations
DESCRIPTION:We are excited to present this session as a part of College’s Inaugural Research Week!\nThis session will provide an overview of small business registration processes\, ownership structure\, and eligibility factors related to SBIR/STTR grants. The main objective of this session is to equip PIs with foundational knowledge for forming a biotech startup aligned with SBIR/STTR requirements.\n\nWhat You’ll Learn:\n\nImportance of Company Registration: Understanding the fundamental requirements for establishing a small business is essential for applying to SBIR/STTR grants. This step is often the first hurdle for academic investigators transitioning into entrepreneurship.\nRegistration Processes: Principal Investigators (PIs) will be guided through the key registration steps necessary for eligibility\, including obtaining an Employer Identification Number (EIN)\, a Unique Entity Identifier (UEI)\, and other essential registrations required for federal grant applications.\nOwnership Structure and Grant Differences: This section will outline ownership requirements and clarify distinctions between SBIR and STTR programs. For example\, SBIR requires that the Principal Investigator be primarily employed by the small business (more than 50% of their time)\, which may present challenges for academic PIs. In contrast\, STTR offers more flexibility by allowing the PI to be employed by either the small business or the partnering research institution.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOur Special Guest:  \n \nRobert Theobald\nVice President\, Small Business Services\nArizona Commerce Authority
