SUMMARY:Translational Cardiovascular Research Center Monthly Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:  \nThe University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix Translational Cardiovascular Research Center (TCRC) presents this monthly seminar series\, which will cover diverse topics in Translational Cardiovascular research. \nReceptor-mediated Approaches to Reducing Cardiovascular Risk \nAtherosclerosis\, a major cause of cardiovascular disease (CVD)\, is an inflammatory disease resulting from the build-up of cholesterol in plaque along the artery walls. As such\, the development of strategies to lower plasma cholesterol levels remains a high priority. \nWhile various lipid-lowering therapies designed to prevent cholesterol from accumulating in the blood have proved successful\, such treatments are sometimes accompanied by adverse side effects and residual CVD risk. \nIn this seminar\, we will discuss three different receptor-based approaches to reducing plasma cholesterol and CVD risk. At the level of the macrophage\, we will focus on the roles of CD36 (an oxidized LDL receptor) and free fatty acid receptor 4 (FFAR4) in the development of atherosclerosis. We will also discuss SR-BI\, a receptor responsible for mediating HDLcholesterol delivery to the liver for whole-body cholesterol excretion. \n  \nWednesday\, October 8th \n12:00 pm – 1:00 pm \nIn Person or Virtual \nHealth Sciences Education Building\, RM C401

SUMMARY:Water Talks - Rehydration During Endurance Exercise: Challenges\, Research\, Options\, Methods
DESCRIPTION:  \nThis presentation considers the detrimental effects of substantial fluid–electrolyte perturbations during endurance exercise and sport\, as well as methods by which athletes and recreational enthusiasts can minimize performance decrements and illness. This is important because an adult can lose 11 to 12% of body weight during an Ironman triathlon in a cool environment\, lose 14 to 18% during day-long walking or hiking in a desert environment\, and gain more than 10% of body weight during an ultraendurance triathlon if fluid intake is excessive. Thus\, the goal of rehydration during endurance exercise should be to maintain a rehydration middle ground that avoids illness due to overhydration and sustains exercise performance by avoiding significant dehydration. Attendees can also earn one continuing education unit for the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM)\, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND) via the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR)\, and the National Athletic Training Association (NATA) via the Board of Certification for the Athletic Trainer (BOC). \n  \nThursday\, October 2nd \n10:00 am – 11:00 am \nIn Person or Virtual \n850 PBC – Rm 255
