DESCRIPTION:Hear from Elise Everett\, MD\nProfessor\, Department of Obstetrics\, Gynecology\, and Reproductive Sciences\nAssistant Dean\, Clerkship Curriculum\nLarner College of Medicine at the University of Vermont \nElise Everett\, MD is a gynecologic oncologist at the University of Vermont Medical Center. She also serves as associate professor and director of clinical clerkships at the Larner College of Medicine at the University of Vermont. \nHer clinical interests include cervical cancer\, early detection for ovarian cancer\, endocervical cancer\, gynecologic cancer\, neoadjuvant chemotherapy for gynecologic malignancies\, ovarian cancer\, robotic surgery\, uterine cancer\, vaginal cancer and vulval cancer. Her research interests are focused on improving early detection of cervical cancer\, reducing inappropriate cervical cancer screening and identifying effective tools to promote adherence to guidelines. Her publications on these topics and others can be found here. \nDr. Everett chose a career in gynecologic oncology because it is the only cancer subspecialty that allows for full comprehensive care of the patient: she is able to offer her patients surgical treatment\, chemotherapy and palliative / end of life care. This allows her to build long-term relationships with her patients and their families\, and to develop deep levels of trust\, empathy and compassion. It is these relationships that fuel her passion for medicine.\nDr. Everett expresses deep gratitude to her patients\, who allow her to participate in their lives in such a meaningful way. He is originally from Greece\, where he attended medical school and received a PhD in infectious diseases. He completed residency training in New York and a fellowship in Philadelphia at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children and Drexel University College of Medicine. At that time\, he also completed an MBA in healthcare management and finance. \nAs the associate dean\, Dr. Koutroulis provides overall leadership in medical student admissions and strategic direction and priorities for the admissions program. He also serves as the school’s representative on inter-school initiatives and university and national committees related to medical school admissions. \nDr. Koutroulis has published work on sepsis\, atopic dermatitis\, obesity and asthma. Dr. Koutroulis also spends a lot of his time teaching the next generation of physicians. Her interests include mentoring and professional development for academic physicians\, promotion of supportive and inclusive learning environments\, work-life integration and medical student and resident education in clinical quality improvement and high-value healthcare. \nHer research interests focus on clinical quality improvement\, particularly in the newborn nursery\, in areas such as breastfeeding\, jaundice\, circumcision\, and newborn opioid-dependence.
