The research of Nipavan Chiamvimonvat, MD (right), chair of the Department of Basic Medical Sciences, focuses on understanding the cellular and molecular mechanisms contributing to cardiac arrhythmias and sudden cardiac death in heart failure

Each September, the American Medical Association honors the celebration of Women in Medicine and Science Month (WIMS), and the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix is spotlighting the exceptional contributions of women in healthcare.

Amongst those being celebrated are Dr. Tanya Kalin, Michelle Huddleston, MD, and Roberta I. H. Matern, MD.

Dr. Tanya Kalina professor of Child Health and Internal Medicine, is leading groundbreaking research in chronic lung diseases and cancer therapies. Her primary focus is to translate laboratory discoveries into clinical trials aimed at improving treatments for metastatic lung cancer and chronic lung diseases in both children and adults.

Michelle Huddleston, MD, serves as the director of the Medicine and Pediatrics (Med-Peds) Residency Program and as a clinical assistant professor of Internal Medicine and Pediatrics at the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix.

Roberta Matern, MD, aims to inspire physicians to practice in areas in the most need. has dedicated her career to patient satisfaction, community service and mentorship. And as the inaugural program director of the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix’s Family Medicine Residency – Payson, she is continuing to pursue each of those passions in service to those most in need.
