Artist + Researcher Exhibition Year 3

Connecting Phoenix’s art and
life science communities.

The Artist + Researcher program (ARx) pairs local Phoenix artists with researchers and scientists from Arizona State University, Northern Arizona University, The University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix, the Translational Genomics Research Institute and PBC biotech companies. Artists and researchers were paired into teams through a speed-dating style event in November 2023 where they ranked their preference of who they would like to work with. The PBC Arts Committee then used those rankings to finalize the teams. The ARx teams worked together over the course of nine months to transform the groundbreaking life science research happening on the campus of the PBC into a variety of art mediums including sculpture, painting, and digital. What emerged at the end are eight incredibly unique pieces of art.

Colonized

Shah Noor Shafqat and Angel Algarin PhD, MPH

Colonized is a collection of fiber and mycelial works that visually interrogate the insidious nature of mental health stigma.

Threads of Caring

Alison Lane, Allie Peckham and Aaron Guest

At the heart of Threads of Caring are portraits of five individuals within our greater Phoenix community who are caregivers to their loved ones with dementia, and who have generously chosen to share their stories.

Dr. Root’s Health Quest “Player Totems

Kevin Clark (KevinOnEarth) and Hayley Root

Each Player Totem in this exclusive debut season offers more than just a ticket to a pioneering experience—it symbolizes a commitment to merging physical and virtual reality for a grand prize.

Tether Vane

Matthew Baral and Paul R. Standley PhD

Tether Vane had two distinct processes: The delicate milling of the oak for the fascia and the free-form sanding of the “fibroblasts”. A joint was cut into each piece of oak, precisely to fit the piece it intersects.

The Cerebrovascular Complexity of a Stroke

Kyllan Maney and Rayna Gonzales

The arrangement of The Cerebrovascular Complexity of a Stroke is a depiction of a small brain artery. The center panel is a cross-section of the artery. And the two side panels are side profiles, one healthy and one in a state of a stroke.

Healing Hands, Resilient Spirit

Tara Sharpe and Pamela Bosch

Healing Hands, Resilient Spirit explores the emotions of a person who has experienced a stroke prior to and post-stroke and the support network surrounding them.

Line Translation Error Generation 1 and Line Translation Error Generation 2

Tra Bouscaren and Ana Gervassi

Metallic photo scans of fingers and zippers offset from the wall and back/through lit with painted neon.

Metastasize vs Mathematize

bacpac and Kamel Lahouel

Metastasize vs. Mathematize means that cancer will be challenged by mathematics: The mathematical formula that can spot mutations early on, will be projected over the artwork that represents cancerous cells.
