ABOR names Chad Sampson new Executive Director

The Arizona Board of Regents announced today the appointment of Chad Sampson as executive director of the board. Sampson previously served as interim executive director of the board since March.

“For more than a decade, Mr. Sampson has been a trusted leader for the board, providing legal counsel and oversight in academic affairs, institutional analysis and more,” said ABOR Chair Cecilia Mata. “Since stepping into an interim role, he has engaged with skillful leadership focused on strategic governance, accountability and transparency. His extensive experience in higher education, combined with his deep commitment to serving Arizona’s students and families, will be invaluable as we move forward.”

Sampson joined the board in 2010 as associate general counsel and transitioned to vice president of strategic planning before serving most recently as vice president of academic affairs and institutional analysis. He is active in the education community, currently serving on the WestEd Board of Directors and has previously served on the board at Tempe Preparatory Academy, Arizona Center for After School Excellence and the Arizona State Board of Education’s Professional Practices Advisory Committee. He has also worked as an adjunct professor at Mesa Community College.

Sampson began serving as interim executive director of the board following former ABOR Executive Director John Arnold’s appointment to interim senior vice president for business affairs and chief financial officer at the University of Arizona.

“I am deeply honored for the opportunity to serve the state of Arizona and the board in this leadership role,” Sampson shared. “I am confident that, in collaboration with the regents, university presidents, faculty and staff, we can continue to enhance higher education for Arizona’s students and families, ensuring a bright future for our state.”
