Our community

The Phoenix Bioscience Core is a collaborative effort between the city of Phoenix, Arizona’s three public universities, and the Arizona Board of Regents. Today, the PBC is home to eight colleges from three universities located alongside global pioneers in genomics and rare disease research, and a growing number of public and private sector leaders advancing novel therapies and technologies to impact the future of health for all.

Who is in the Phoenix Bioscience Core

The Phoenix Bioscience Core is home to a growing number of life science companies, the state’s three publicly funded research universities, educational organizations, hospitals and government agencies focused on cancer, vaccines, genomics, precision medicine and much more.

ASU College of Health Solutions

Founded in 2012, the College of Health Solutions at Arizona State University is the only health college of its kind — which is what you would expect from the most innovative university in the nation. Our faculty and students translate health research and discovery into practice to improve health outcomes. We bring people together to improve the health of the communities we serve, reaching them where they live, learn, work and play throughout the lifespan.

ASU Edson College of Nursing and Health Innovation

The ASU Edson College of Nursing and Health Innovation provides a first-class education for over 5,300 undergraduate and graduate students. Students completing their Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree from the Edson College have an NCLEX first-time pass rate of 95%, compared to the national average of 89.5%. Both our Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) and Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degrees are ranked by U.S. News and World Report as two of the best programs in the nation.

ASU Preparatory Academy

ASU Preparatory is a tuition-free college preparatory school that serves students in grades K-12. ASU Prep is chartered by Arizona State University with the goal of helping each student prep for college. Prep for careers. Prep for life.

BacVax

BacVax Inc. is developing vaccines against bacteria. BacVax holds an Exclusive Patent License Agreement to use the BVP platform in conjunction with additional patent applications targeting bacteria. BacVax has already garnered attention of strategic partners to explore human and animal market opportunities.

Calviri

Calviri’s mission is to provide affordable products worldwide that will end deaths from cancer by combining a unique, highly immunogenic source of neoantigens with a peptide array platform. On our course to eradicate cancer we will develop new diagnostic and therapeutic products, and then preventative vaccines that will stop cancer from starting.

Center for Entrepreneurial Innovation

The Center for Entrepreneurial Innovation (CEI) was created by GateWay Community College and the Maricopa County Community College District to provide incubation space for bioscience entrepreneurs in Phoenix. Since 2013, our incubator has supported over 80 startups who have created 765 jobs, secured $117.5 million in capital, and generated more than $160 million in total gross revenue.

Dignity Health

The Dignity Health – Cancer Institute at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center opened the doors to its new facility on Phoenix Bioscience Core in 2015, leveraging the strengths of both Dignity Health and the University of Arizona to offer high-quality cancer care services that are collaborative, research-driven, interdisciplinary, translational, and patient-focused.

ElectraTect

ElectraTect, Inc. was founded in 2020 based on a UCLA invention and study reported by Darzi and Garg earlier that year related to the detection of THC. With the support of Intoxalock, our strategic partner and primary investor, and a research collaboration with UCLA scientists, ElectraTect, Inc. is well poised to become the world leader in cannabis detection technology.

Exact Sciences

Exact Sciences’ current portfolio of products primarily focuses on colorectal, breast and prostate cancers, with research and development looking at the top 15 deadliest cancers, including multi-cancer testing. Our vision is to eradicate cancer and the suffering it causes through tests that detect it earlier and provide guidance for successful treatment.

FAKnostics

FAKnostics is a University of Arizona spin-off company with a presence in the Phoenix Bioscience Core. The team has more than 30 years of FAK research leadership and therapeutic development, with core competencies in pharmacology and drug discovery, especially structure-based drug design and computational drug discovery.

International Genomics Consortium

A key pioneer in the biosciences industry that translates genomic discoveries into medically and scientifically helpful information that physicians and researchers can use for medical management, to validate findings, and to make new medical breakthroughs.

National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases

NIDDK research creates knowledge about and treatments for diseases that are among the most chronic, costly, and consequential for patients, their families, and the Nation.

NAU College of Health and Human Services

In the fall of 2012, Northern Arizona University opened the Physician Assistant and Doctor of Physical Therapy programs at the PBC. The inaugural Occupational Therapy doctoral class began in fall 2014, the first of its kind in the state. Athletic Training is the most recent graduate program to be added to the PBC, with its first cohort having begun in fall 2016. Our students have the opportunity to work with students from the University of Arizona, and this integrative approach will produce a collaborative environment that promotes professional growth and cutting-edge research.

Ordinatrix

Ordinatrix provides a customizable solution for analysis of the proteome with the commercial introduction of the Nucleic Acid Programmable Protein Arrays (NAPPA) platform. Our just-in-time protein production process allows us to provide customers with the screening of the complete human proteome comprising over 18,000 unique proteins, or selective target proteins of their choosing at the time of order.

PathologyWatch

PathologyWatch is working with dermatology practices to manage your pathology workflow using a digital model, improving the quality of patient care, reducing costs, and opening up new potential streams of revenue for clinics and hospitals.

Phoenix Union Bioscience High School

The PXU Bioscience High School is a unique and collaborative small school in the heart of the downtown Phoenix Bioscience Core and are surrounded by industry partners in biomedicine and engineering. We offer an all-honors level curriculum in which students are challenged through acceleration, personalization, deep investigation, and project-based learning.

TGen

Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen) is a Phoenix, Arizona-based nonprofit organization dedicated to conducting groundbreaking research with life-changing results. TGen is affiliated with City of Hope, a world-renowned independent research and treatment center for cancer, diabetes and other life-threatening diseases

Translational Sciences

Translational Sciences is using targeted biologic therapies for unmet medical needs including pulmonary embolism, ischemic stroke, hemorrhages and more.

UArizona College of Medicine – Phoenix

The University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix has graduated more than 660 students since its first class in 2007. UArizona COMP is home to nearly 200 on-campus faculty and more than 1,200 affiliate faculty as part of our partnerships with Banner – University Medical Center Phoenix, Abrazo Central Campus, Phoenix Children’s Hospital, Valleywise Health, St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center, HonorHealth, Mayo Clinic, Hospice of the Valley and the Phoenix VA Health Care System; and have 1,184 community faculty at locations around the state. The College is partnered with nine clinical affiliates, anchored by Banner Health, our primary clinical partner since 2015. Faculty at the College conduct research focused on improving the health and wellbeing of residents of Arizona and beyond. The College garners more than $11 million in research grants annually. The Health Sciences Education Building, which opened in July 2012, is a state-of-the-art, 268,000-square-foot, six-story facility with lecture halls, the Center for Simulation and Innovation, clinical education suites, an anatomy lab, offices and various flexible classrooms.

UArizona Eller College of Management

The University of Arizona’s Eller College of Management offers its executive MBA program on the Phoenix Bioscience Core.

UArizona Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health

Established in January of 2000 by the Arizona Board of Regents, The University of Arizona Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health is currently the first and only nationally accredited college of public health in Arizona. The UArizona Zuckerman College of Public Health is organized into three academic departments, and a division on the Phoenix campus, that reflect the nature of their research, teaching and practice: Community, Environment and Policy, Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Health Promotion Sciences, Division of Public Health Practice & Translational Research in Phoenix.

UArizona R. Ken Coit College of Pharmacy

The UArizona College of Pharmacy’s location on the PBC offers students a great location to receive their degree. Situated in the heart of downtown Phoenix, the PBC allows students to mingle with peers from ASU and NAU. The College of Pharmacy’s PharmD program uses modern classroom video conferencing technology to simultaneously deliver courses in Tucson and Phoenix. Students in both locations have full interaction with professors and each other. There are instructors on site to answer students’ questions and guide learning activities.

Venture Café Phoenix

Venture Café Phoenix is part of a global network that seeks to further the local innovation ecosystem. The mission is to “connect innovators to make things happen” through high-impact programming, spaces, storytelling, and broad innovation engagement.

Vidium Animal Health

Vidium is dedicated to unravelling the genetic components of common and complex diseases, including cancer. Vidium’s focus is on shifting paradigms in cancer treatment to enable cures for cancer and other serious diseases in pets through programs at the intersection of personalized medicine and comparative genomics.

Wexford Science + Technology

Wexford Science + Technology collaborates with clients to create vibrant, mixed-use, amenity-rich communities that drive innovation across multiple disciplines, and are built on a foundation of research, discovery, entrepreneurial activity, corporate engagement, and community outreach.
