Lexie Bower and Shirin Doroudgar discussing their Artist + Researcher Exhibition work

Artist + Researcher Exhibit featured on Arizona PBS

The Phoenix Bioscience Core’s Artist + Researcher Exhibit was recently featured on Arizona Horizons on AZ PBS.

PBC Arts Committee Chair Dr. Cynthia Standley and local Phoenix Artist Alexandra Bowers sat down with host Ted Simons to discuss Bowers’ process for coming up with her piece, which debut in our first cohort, and to preview the second exhibit, which will debut this fall.

Check out the interview below (the video starts at about the 20 minute mark).

“It’s really about breaking down that complex information into something that is understandable and approachable by the general public,” Standley said. Standley is a neurophysiologist and a professor at the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix with a passion for the arts as well. She’s worked in art and medicine since 2014 and believes now is the perfect time to bring these two passions together.

The Artist + Researcher Exhibit is the culmination of nearly 10 months of work between teams of Phoenix-area artists and PBC scientists. Groups are paired together following a speed-dating style event and then collaborate in the lab and studio for months to develop a translational piece of art. The art then goes on display and is available to purchase.

The most recent cohort of the Artist + Researcher was selected announced earlier this year. You can check out the pairings here. Researchers come from the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix, Arizona State University, Northern Arizona University, TGen and ElectraTect. The artists range from painters, sculptors and even live performance art.

The next Artist + Researcher Exhibit will have its first look on August 11 at 850 PBC, and will be available for public viewing at Bentley Gallery on August 18. You can still view the first exhibit at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport through July.
