Artist + Researcher Exhibition
Year 4
Connecting Phoenix’s art and
life science communities.
The Artist + Researcher (ARx) program brings together Phoenix’s vibrant arts community and the groundbreaking life sciences work taking place at the Phoenix Bioscience Core (PBC). The program pairs local artists with researchers and scientists from Arizona State University, Northern Arizona University, The University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix, the Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen), and PBC-based life sciences companies.
The collaboration begins with a speed-dating style event, where artists and researchers meet, exchange ideas, and rank their preferred partners. Based on these rankings, the PBC Arts Committee forms the final teams. Over the course of nine months, these artist-researcher teams work together to translate complex, cutting-edge life science research into compelling works of art.
The result is a collection of extraordinary pieces, spanning sculpture, painting, digital media, and more — each offering a unique perspective on the innovative research happening within the PBC and the intersection of science and creativity.
Grounds for Recovery

Patricia Sannit
Christopher Wharton
A collapsing system set on a fertile foundation. More specifically, a collection of ceramic pieces representing growth and decay, soil and potential, set on a table with a hidden message of the impact of change.
In the Wake

Kendra Sollars
Dr. Krzyzanowski
By making the invisible visible, In the Wake: The Silent Drift of Environmental Neurotoxins invites reflection and conversation about how our surroundings shape our health, and how awareness can lead to healthier futures.
The Stories We Carry

Chris Ignacio
Manisha Thakkar, MD
Crafted from paper and layered with symbolic imagery, The Stories We Carry transforms a giant paper airplane into a metaphor for how personal narratives are constructed, held, and shared.
Beckoned Upward By the Wallpaper as I Drifted Into a Cold Bed

Kris Manzanares
Dr. Oaklee Rogers
Oil on panel, the vision of a home, family and the self as a supportive and essential component of this allows a father with Substance Use Disorder to reach for a better life.
Untitled

Interactive door that leads to someplace else. Each time the door is opened reveals another scene.
Using Health Data for Better Health Outcomes

A journey through time and space, involving eight multi-media pieces of paper, ink, feathers, maps pins, and cotton thread framed in maple and mounted on a wall.
Iterative Growth

Hannah Deni Schlossmacher
Candice Wike
Rooted in the structure of histones, this Tree of Life sculpture symbolizes how genetic balance sustains growth—and how its disruption, as in Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG), can unravel life itself.
The Art and Science of Healthy Brain Aging

Carousel of animal paintings representing lifestyle choices to prevent Alzheimer disease.
Decoded

This twelve-sketch series mirrors a scientist’s notebook, weaving art and data into a vibrant reflection of neuroplasticity and the curiosity that drives brain research.
