Water Talks – Rehydration During Endurance Exercise: Challenges, Research, Options, Methods

This presentation considers the detrimental effects of substantial fluid–electrolyte perturbations during endurance exercise and sport, as well as methods by which athletes and recreational enthusiasts can minimize performance decrements and illness. This is important because an adult can lose 11 to 12% of body weight during an Ironman triathlon in a cool environment, lose 14 to 18% during day-long walking or hiking in a desert environment, and gain more than 10% of body weight during an ultraendurance triathlon if fluid intake is excessive. Thus, the goal of rehydration during endurance exercise should be to maintain a rehydration middle ground that avoids illness due to overhydration and sustains exercise performance by avoiding significant dehydration. Attendees can also earn one continuing education unit for the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND) via the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR), and the National Athletic Training Association (NATA) via the Board of Certification for the Athletic Trainer (BOC).
