Greater Phoenix is on a trajectory to become a premier hub for medical device manufacturing, driven by the collaborative efforts of the Medical Device Manufacturing Multiplier (MDM2) consortium. Comprising companies, research and educational institutions, and entrepreneurial and venture capital partners, MDM2 aims to create a thriving ecosystem that educates and engages a diverse, skilled workforce, fosters innovation, and attracts capital investments for industry growth. By drawing parallels to the semiconductor industry, MDM2 leverages critical intersections that can bolster our efforts in medical device manufacturing.
Semiconductors and Medical Device Manufacturing
Arizona is a leading semiconductor hub with over 75 semiconductor companies, including Intel, Onsemi, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC), Amkor, and EMD Electronics. The medical device manufacturing industry has grown alongside semiconductors, benefitting from talent pipelines, facilities, and supply chains. Federal initiatives, like the CHIPS and Science Act and the EDA Tech Hubs Program, have fueled the industry’s future expansion, setting an opportunity for growth. As medical devices become smarter by integrating chips, sensors, and AI/ML capabilities, Arizona is poised to lead future medical device innovation and manufacturing.
MDM2 and SEMI Collaboration: Shaping the Future
MDM2 and SEMI Smart MedTech Industry Group are partnering to host Shaping the Future of Advancing Electronics and Medical Technologies, a three-day workshop and conference from April 22–24, 2025, at the ASU Futures Health Center.
The event will spotlight key technologies such as:
- Flexible hybrid electronics
- Bio-signal sensing for cognitive and physical state monitoring
- Hybrid electronics for medical applications
Before the conference begins, an exclusive tour of Medtronic will take place to explore the advanced operations in designing and manufacturing microelectronics for implantable medical devices. The first day of the conference, April 22nd, will focus on the technical gap analysis workshop on Flexible Hybrid Electronics (FHE) to shape FlexTech’s 2025 Request for Proposals (RFP). Highlighting speakers from GE Aerospace, Cornell University, and ACI Materials, Inc. to explore the latest developments and participate in breakout sessions to discuss challenges, gaps and priorities for the future of innovation. The following day, April 23rd, is the Nano-Bio Materials Consortium (NBMC) Technical Gap Analysis Workshop. Participants with speakers from SEMI, BlueHalo, GE HealthCare, the University of California, and DermiSense will bring together industry, government, and academia to address the technical gaps to prepare for the next NBMC RFP.
The final day of the conference April 24th, the workshop will celebrate Greater Phoenix’s medical device ecosystem, featuring Arizona-based speakers Kiran Avancha (HonorHealth), Rochelle Rivas (MCCCD), Alex Tessmer (BD), and Randal Schulahuer (Medtronic) and panelists Jonathon Parker (Mayo), Karen Anderson (ASU & Mayo), and Mathew Anderson (HonorHealth) to discuss topics like investing in the medical device technology manufacturing renaissance, how wearables and implantables improve care, how digital health data transforms stroke care, and many more cutting-edge clinical research and medical technology advancements.
Each day will conclude with a reception. The first being at the Mayo IERB building, where attendees will have an opportunity to tour the Mayo Clinic Lab for Function, followed by a student poster networking reception. The next day will conclude at the Phoenix Bioscience Core (PBC), where attendees will have guided tours and a presentation on Bringing the Clinical Needs and Emerging Technology: Emerging Device- Based Intervention Platforms: Wearables, Robotics, and BioHybrids. Thursday, the final day will conclude with a program at Venture Cafe held at the PBC where the broader community will have the opportunity to interact and benefit from the dialogue.
