From Downtown to Discovery: Martin “Marty” Shultz Honored for Shaping Phoenix’s Bioscience Future

On Tuesday, April 21, 2026, the City of Phoenix honored Martin “Marty” Shultz with a ceremonial street sign at the corner of 4th and McKinley streets in Downtown Phoenix. A true city-shaper, Marty played a foundational role in the area’s transformation, helping establish the Phoenix Community Alliance, advancing landmark projects like the Arizona Center and the Human Services Campus, and championing a more connected, vibrant urban core.

During the ceremony, Marty reflected on the collaborative leadership that helped shape Phoenix into a center for innovation. He emphasized that progress across sectors—from transportation to bioscience—was never the result of a single individual, but of sustained, collective effort. He also pointed to the city’s early commitment to building a bioscience industry “from scratch” and credited past and present leaders, including Phoenix’s first woman mayor, Margaret T. Hance, for making bold decisions that continue to influence the region’s growth and quality of life.

Additional remarks were shared by Mayor Kate Gallego, Phoenix Bioscience Core Executive Director Scarlett Spring, and fellow city-shaper Mo Stein, who reflected on Marty’s lasting impact. Speakers underscored that Phoenix’s success is rooted not only in innovation but in the people whose vision and leadership have shaped the community.

In accepting the honor, Marty emphasized that the recognition belongs to the many public servants, business leaders, and community partners who have contributed to Phoenix’s evolution—particularly those who helped establish the strong economic and innovation foundation the city benefits from today.

Marty’s contributions helped lay the groundwork for a place where collaboration, discovery, and impact come together to advance health for all. As the Phoenix Bioscience Core continues to grow as a leading hub, it’s important to recognize the leaders whose vision and commitment made this progress possible.

Martin L. Shultz Way is located at the corner of 4th and McKinley streets in Downtown Phoenix on the Phoenix Bioscience Core.
